There are times when I face something and I can’t see or imagine the outcome. I don’t know what to do. I wake up every morning hoping to have the strength for the problem, but everyday I face the same problem. It looks like there is no way this will ever get resolved. When this happens I want to give up. It seems to me like I will never have the strength to overcome this difficulty. I want to throw in the towel because I don’t know how to make it better. I don’t believe I will ever have the strength to overcome the problem.
We won’t be able to deal with or overcome any difficulty in life through a one day fix. It’s not about waking up and telling myself, “Today is the day I deal with this issue.” It’s about knowing I have enough strength for today. I don’t have enough strength to get through the next 3 months. It’s just for today. This doesn’t mean the next 3 months are hopeless. I will have enough strength for each day.
It’s about taking my situation, what it may be, one day at a time. Knowing I have the strength to make it through this day and I will worry about the strength for the next day tomorrow, not today.
In the book of Exodus the writer tells the story of the Israelites journey through the desert for 40 years. This story doesn’t sound hopeless to us because we know the ending. To the Israelites their situation seemed hopeless. It seemed never ending. Who would want to walk through the desert for the next 40 years.
God is guiding and leading them the whole time. God provides them with exactly what they need for each day. The Israelites live off of bread sent from God everyday. He doesn’t send enough to get them through a week, a month, a year. God provides them with enough for that day and the next day He does the same thing. This goes on for 40 years. Every day God provides the Israelites with enough to get through each day.
God acts in the same thing for us as he did for the Israelites. God doesn’t give us the strength to face everything to come our way for the next year, but God gives us the strength we need for whatever it is we will face today. When I face a difficulty I want it to be over now. I want to know what I’m suppose to do and I want to fix it. God doesn’t work like this. It’s about going on the journey with God. It’s about seeing God in this journey. It’s about taking the strength God gives us for today. As He gives us the strength for today and then the next day and then the next day God will see us to the end of whatever situation we face.
What I have learned is most difficulties won’t end as quick as I want them to. When I take life one day at a time these difficulties in my life don’t have power over me. When I rely on the strength for today I see God at work. Life is a lot harder when I think I have the strength to handle the next month. There is an abundance of hope when I realize I have all the strength I need for today.
